I wouldn't say depression is a sign you're on the right track. Apologies if that wasn't clear in the article. Rather, a lot of the symptoms and exacerbators of depression come from misdirected energy that can be directed towards more skillful pursuits. Recognizing such symptoms like an overly critical inner dialogue and using it to your advantage — for instance, to get you to go workout and get your life in shape — can be much more effective for change than pretending it is not happening, everything is okay, and not harnessing the mispent energy.
